It seems like it might be the end of an era in New York City.

On Wednesday night, TSN’s insider Bob McKenzie reported that longtime Rangers president Glen Sather is expected to step down in the near future.

McKenzie did specify that the decision to step down would be Sather’s call in the end. The 75-year-old would likely remain an advisor to James Dolan, the executive chairman and CEO of MSG.

On Thursday morning, Sportnet's John Shannon confirmed that Sather would retire at season's end. It seems like the legendary president has made the call and will step down in a couple of days.

Shannon also notes that Sather will still be an advisor, but he will not be involved in the day to day operation of the team.

You can take hockey away from the man! Just like his cigar, it seems.

Sather has been with the Rangers since 2000 when he joined the organization as their president and general manager.

He eventually became the team’s head coach for parts of the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons, missing the playoffs each time.

Sather stepped down from his GM role following the 2014-15 campaign and was replaced by Jeff Gorton. The duo announced during last year’s trade deadline that the team was embarking on a rebuild phase, however, there is chatter that the Rangers could become a heavy player in the free agency market this summer.
