The Winnipeg Jets have added veteran center Matt Hendricks to their roster.
Hendricks is an acclaimed leader on and off of the ice, a dependable bottom-six blue-collar player with over 500 NHL games under his belt. The 36-year-old spent the last three seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, after he was traded from Nashville partway through the 2013-14 season.
He broke into the NHL with the Colorado Avalanche back in 2008-2009, and while Hendricks isn't going to be lighting the lamp often in Winnipeg, he offers grit and leadership that a relatively young roster in Winnipeg should benefit from.
Hendricks led the Oilers in the faceoff circle, winning 132/232 draws (56.9%) as well as being a staple on the penalty kill. He ranks among the top-25 NHL forwards in shorthanded time-on-ice over the last five seasons.
Hendricks played 42 games last season with the Oilers, scoring 4 goals, 7 points, and amassing 29 penalty minutes.
The term and price make him a great fit in Winnipeg. A useful roleplayer that brings a lot to the team no matter how many minutes he plays, this signing was a solid move from the Jets.
