The Maple Leafs have traded Andreas Johnsson in a one for one deal.

According to a breaking news report from National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman, the Toronto Maple Leafs have just traded forward Joey Anderson to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for forward Joey Anderson. This trade on the surface may seem heavily lopsided in favor of the New Jersey Devils, and that's likely due to the fact that it is at least from a pure hockey perspective. 

There's little doubt here that Johnsson is the best player in this deal but there's also no doubt about the fact that he was also the considerably more expensive player in this deal as well. Johnson had a cap hit of $3.4 million on his current deal that runs through the 2022 - 2023 regular season, meanwhile Anderson is coming off a contract that saw him earning under $1 million per season. 

The move is enough to move the Maple Leafs under the salary cap for the upcoming 2020 - 2021 NHL regular season, but that might not be the case for very long. The Leafs still have some key restricted free agents to sign including Ilya Mikheyev, Joseph Andersen, and Travis Dermott, so that cap space is all but gone already.
