The Detroit Red Wings are still suffering from the loss of owner Mike Ilitch at the age of 87. Ilitch bought the Red Wings in 1982 and turned the team into a perennial playoff contender and while there were some organizational decisions that fans in the city didn't always agree with, there was never any doubt that he was a beloved and well-respected member of the community.

Today, the Red Wings announced they will wear a commemorative patch in honor of Mike Ilitch.

Ilitch was inducted into the Hockey Hall-of-Fame in 2003 and the United States Hockey Hall-of-Fame in 2004, there hopefully his tremendous contributions to the sport will be remembered forever.

Classy move by the Wings.
