Last night, around 2h30AM ET, the Edmonton Oilers fired general manager Peter Chiarelli, hours after the team fell 3-2 to the Detroit Red Wings, the 26th club in the league right now. The damage has been done, however, it is about time to turn a new leaf.

According to Sportsnet's John Shannon, the search for a new GM in Edmonton begins immediately. Many NHL insiders believe that for a true fresh start, the Oilers will need to look outside the organization as it has been suggested that head coach Ken Hitchcock, managements members Craig MacTavish or Kevin Lowe as potential replacements.

For now, Shannon confirmed that assistant GM Keith Gretzky would take over Chiarelli's duties.

Shannon believes that some of the top candidates for the job in Edmonton are Mike Gillis, Mark Hunter, Kelly McCrimmon and Mike Futa

Gillis is a former president and general manager of the Vancouver Canucks and still has tons of behind-the-scenes insights in the NHL. Hunter was hoping to land the role of Toronto Maple Leafs general manager when Lou Lamoriello left the club, but that job went to Kyle Dubas. Vegas Golden Knights assistant GM McCrimmon has been mentioned on the list of potential GMs for future Seattle franchise, but could get a go earlier with the Oilers, while Los Angeles Kings assistant GM Futa has been a candidate for many recent GM openings in the past years, including with the Philadelphia Flyers and Carolina Hurricanes.

Shannon dares to add former Flyers GM Ron Hextall as a candidate. There was some bad blood between the Oilers and Hextall back in 1987, and it could seem odd for Edmonton to hire him, however, the team is most likely over this. However, some doubt Hextall is fit to untangle the mess created in Edmonton.

The name of Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland has been mentioned as well. His contract is soon coming to end in Hockey Town and the rumors keep growing that former captain and NHL great Steve Yzerman is ready to take over with the Red Wings.

What if the Oilers manage to convince him to become GM in Edmonton now?

Decisions, decisions. One thing is sure is that the new guy will need to be ready to bring forth a clear vision for the future.
