The Edmonton Oilers have gotten off to a disastrous start to the 2017-18 season, leading to speculation that Oilers GM Pete Chiarelli may make a drastic move to save his team’s fortune. The latest rumor involved center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins heading to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Ryan Murray. Regardless of what your thoughts are on The Nuge, this is most certainly a lopsided deal.

In fact, a cursory scan of Chiarelli’s trade history reveals many more of these lopsided deals. Just take a look at some of the players that Chiarellli has traded, or trade the picks for during his tenure as a GM with both the Boston Bruins and Oilers:

Phil Kessel

Rickard Rakell

Tyler Seguin

Johnny Boychuk

Justin Schultz

Taylor Hall

Nail Yakupov

Jordan Eberle

Yeesh… that doesn’t look good. Arguably the only trade he won was the Kessel deal that netted him Seguin and Hamilton. Of course, both of those players are now long gone as well, with Chiarelli himself trading Seguin in perhaps his most lopsided deal and successor Don Sweeney trading Hamilton to the Calgary Flames.

So, what does all this amount to? Nothing really… except it acts as a warning for all Oilers fans. Those who fail to recognize past mistakes are doomed to repeat them.
