The Stanley Cup sends heartfelt message to Ovechkin

We’ve never seen this before…

The Washington Capitals’ road to back-to-back championship came to an end last night.

The Carolina Hurricanes came out on top, winning Game 7 by the final score of 4-3 in double overtime. Captain Justin Williams, mister Game 7 himself who collected an assist on the winning goal, shook Alex Ovechkin’s hand after his team’s stunning victory.

You could tell from the start of the season how much Ovechkin wanted to reunite with the Cup. When the Caps raised their championship banner at the start of the season, Ovi parted ways with the trophy, kissing it goodbye before placing it back into its crate.

It felt like the two had developed a loving relationship and Ovi will be glad to know this morning it wasn’t just something he felt.

After the heartbreaking elimination at the hands of the Canes, the Stanley Cup itself, via its Twitter account, sent Ovechkin a heartfelt message.

Dear @ovi8

It’s not goodbye, it’s see you later.

Yours truly,
SC

While the Capitals will remain a strong contender for seasons to come, it seems like a second championship will have to wait for Ovi and his teammates.

Ovehckin ended his run with a series-high nine points… but all he knows is that he won’t spend another loving summer with the Cup.
