The Red Wings' face off against one of the hottest teams in the NHL this afternoon, and will do so without a crucial playmaker.

Detroit Red Wings' GM Ken Holand confirmed that forward Tomas Vanek will not be in the lineup for Sunday's matchup against the Minnesota Wild. The veteran sniper is dealing with an ankle injury, despite playing 14 minutes in Saturday’s 2-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets, scoring the team’s lone goal.

He is listed as day-to-day with the ailment.

Vanek has been productive this season when healthy, and remains one of the few offensive bright spots on the roster.

The 33-year old has scored 14 goals and added 22 assists in 43 games. His .837 point per game average leads all Wings' skaters. The pending unrestricted free agent signed a one-year, $2.6 million contract in free agency, and has been the subject of trade rumors throughout the season.

With the Red Wings in desperate need of points, they will have to band together as they attempt to return to playoff contention this season.
