The offseason addition of David Backes to the Boston Bruins is one of Don Sweeney’s best moves (second-best to re-signing Brad Marchand for eight years).

With his first game as a Bruin under wraps, playing alongside Danton Heinen and David Pastrnak, he showed no signs of slowing down. Although it was a preseason game, it is an excellent way to gauge the talent that will be evident in the regular season. In his last five seasons as a Saint-Louis Blues player, the 6’3”, 221-pound winger tallied over 20 goals per year.

A lot of flak was said about his contract duration when taking into consideration his age (32), but with his grit, defensive ability, and leadership, he will be appreciated by the youngsters and veterans alike.

Backes will add veteran experience and guidance the young Bruins can benefit from. There’s more to him that just a good game from time to time. The Bruins know this, and so do his opponents.
