The Detroit Red Wings fan base may have more of a reason than any other to pay attention to the World Junior Championship as they have young prospects that they hope will one day will fill key spots on their roster.

The Wings have three prospects at the tournament, a second, a third and a fourth round pick, but more importantly they are players who play positions that are currently points of weakness for the Red Wings, defensemen and a goaltender.

The two defensemen are 2016 second round pick Filip Hronek (53rd overall) and 2015 third round draft pick Vili Saarijarvi (73rd overall) who will represent the Czech Republic and Finland respectively while the goaltender Joren van Pottelberghe is a former 2015 pick (110th overall) and will be representing Switzerland.

The Red Wings are currently shallow on defense, and there's a belief that whether it's through trade or the expansion draft that one of their goalies may be gone before next season rolls around, so all three of these prospects could see significant roles in Detroit in the future, assuming of course that they earn the spot.
