Timo Meier pulls off the “Forsberg” in Game 1.

A gutsy play in a huge game.

Boy oh boy is San Jose Sharks forward Timo Meier ever putting himself on the map this season.

After putting up a very impressive 30 goals in just his second season in the National Hockey League the 22 year old Swiss forward has really hammered home just how good he is in the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Prior to Game 1 this evening Meier appeared in all 14 games for the Sharks during the playoffs thus far and contributed 3 goals and 7 assists for a total of 10 points over those games. A very solid showing thus far in the playoffs to be sure, but none of those points will compare to the dazzling display he put on tonight.

Meier would score an incredible goal for the Sharks on Saturday night during the 2nd period of Game 1, with a little bit of an assist from teammate Logan Couture. The Sharks were of course facing the St. Louis Blues in the Western Conference Final and although the Blues had only allowed 4 goals over their last 3 games they were lit up by the Sharks in Game 1.

The standout goal from Meier would end up being the Sharks 4th goal of the game and it came after the Blues were attempting to move the puck out of their zone and into neutral ice. It was at that moment that Couture saw an opportunity for a poke check and not only managed to strip the puck from the Blues, but got it within range of the aforementioned Meier. Meier would turn on the Jets and blow past the Blues, who were completely caught unprepared for the turnover, and got himself a partial breakaway as a result. Meier would beat Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington, who had been outstanding coming into tonight, using a move that brings back memories of National Hockey League legend Peter Forsberg.

It was a truly impressive display of athletic skill from Meier, but it was also an equally impressive display of his big game mentality. It takes the right attitude to go for a play like that in the Western Conference Final, and Timo Meier delivered in every way possible.
