During the qualifying series between the Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames, head coach Paul Maurice was adamant that forward Matthew Tkachuk intentionally brought his skate blade down on the back of star centre Mark Scheifele’s leg, causing a potentially severe injury.

The incident happened early in Game 1 of the best-of-five Western Conference qualifying series between the Jets and Flames, which Calgary won by a score of 4-1.

Tkachuk explained how he never meant to hurt Scheifele, but it didn’t seem to sway Maurice’s opinion.

“I didn’t feel any contact with my skate on his at all,” Tkachuk said. “I did feel most of my body weight and most of my power went in and he turned. It looked like his left leg got caught there, but at no point did my skate hit him there.”

On Tuesday, Scheifele met with media members to talk about his injury and what it means for the Jets’ forward as the 2020-21 fast approaches. While he did not reveal the nature of his injury, he did confirm that it wasn’t the Achilles’ heel, that he won’t need surgery and will be back to 100 per cent in the near future.

He also revealed that Tkachuk reached out to him and that they discussed the play, though he did add that he felt Tkachuk was out of control on the play, that he was trying to get a piece of him.

He even added that he does not hold a grudge and forgives Tkachuk for inuring him.

“The way my parents raised me is you forgive everyone and that’s all you can do. You wish the best on every person.”
