A fair warning to our readers, some of these details may cause painful flashbacks to horrible moments in the history of your favorite franchise.

With all the focus on the tremendous amount of money handed out to the National Hockey League's 2016 free agent class there has naturally been speculation regarding which one of these big money contracts will turn out to be a disaster for the organization that signed. While we will have to wait for those answers, we can look back at some of the poor decisions of the past.

In a recent article for Bleacher Report, Lyle Richardson compiled a list of what he feels are the "Top 10" worst contracts in the NHL, and his list features some truly horrendous deals, all of them currently still active in the NHL.

#1 Dion Phaneuf, Ottawa Senators - 7 years / $49 million, under contract until 2020-2021.

#2 Dustin Brown, Los Angeles Kings - 8 years / $47 million, under contract until 2021-2022

#3 Semyon Varlamov, Colorado Avalanche - 5 years / $28 million, under contract until 2018-2019

#4 Ryan Callahan, Tampa Bay Lightning - 6 years / $34.8 million, under contract until 2019-2020

#5 Jason Pominville, Minnesota Wild - 5 years / $28 million, under contract until 2018-2019

#6 Jimmy Howard, Detroit Red Wings - 6 years / $31.75 million, under contract until 2018-2019

# 7 Marian Hosa, Chicago Blackhawks - 12 years / $63.3 million, under contract until 2020-2021

#8 Andrew MacDonald, Philadelphia Flyers - 6 years / $30 million, under contract until 2019-2020

#9 David Clarkson, Columbus Blue Jackets - 7 years / $36.75 million, under contract until 2019-2020
