Top goaltending prospect will not sign with his team, soon to be free-agent.

If you're the Buffalo Sabres or a fan of the team, this is the last thing you want to hear.

22-year-old Cal Petersen declared his intent to join the ranks of the National Hockey League this season, however almost immediately following that announcement ESPN insider John Buccigross dropped some huge news.

According to Buccigross the "word out there" is that Petersen does not intend to sign with the Buffalo Sabres, the team that drafted him, and will instead wait out the remaining period where Buffalo controls his exclusive rights and become a free agent later this summer.

Petersen was selected in the 5th round of the 2015 NHL draft by the Sabres, and over the course of the past three seasons has put up very solid numbers as Notre-Dame's goaltender in the NCAA.

In his most recent campaign Petersen backstopped 40 games for Notre Dame and recorded a 2.22 goals against average and .926 save percentage over those games.

Update: Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman has echoed the report from Buccigross, indicating that Petersen will in fact be, in theory, available to sign with any NHL team.
