Trade Alert: Blackhawks acquire Calvin de Haan
Zuma Press

This just in, the Chicago Blackhawks have acquired defenseman Calvin de Haan and forward Aleksi Saarela from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for goaltender Anton Forsberg and defenseman Gustav Forsling.

Check it out:

De Haan tallied 13 assists in 74 regular-season games with the Hurricanes this past season. He also helped Carolina to the Eastern Conference Finals, notching one goal in 12 Stanley Cup Playoff games. The 28 year old is signed for three more seasons at a $4.55 million cap hit. Prior to signing with the Hurricanes last season, De Haan spent six seasons with the New York Islanders organization. The 22 year old Saarela is a former 3rd round piuck who put up an impressive 30 goals and 54 points in 69 games with the Hurricanes' AHL affiliate Charlotte Checkers this past season.

As for the Hurricanes' return on this deal, the biggest asset they acquire is cap space. With De Haan's contract off the books, expect the surging 'Canes to be aggressive on July 1st. The 23 year old Forsling struggled in 43 games with the Blackhawks this past season, but still has some NHL upside. Forsberg, a 26 year old goaltender, could potentially fill the void left by departing free agents Curtis McElhinney and/or Petr Mrazek.
