Fire sale in Anaheim?

The Montreal Canadiens cruised past the struggling Anaheim Ducks 4-1 at the Bell Centre on Tuesday night, but it did not stop Habs general manager Marc Bergevin from looking into the possibility of acquiring one of their players.

Sean Gordon of The Athletic pointed Wednesday out that Bergevin has been scouting the Ducks, travelling both to Winnipeg and then to Toronto before watching them take on the Canadiens in Montreal. Gordon speculated that Bergevin is shopping for a defense partner of Shea Weber and believes Cam Fowler could be his target.

It isn't the first time the Canadiens have been linked to Fowler: back in 2016, Bergevin was said to be looking into the possibility of making a move to land the talented blue liner.

When asked about his plan heading into the trade deadline, Bergevin was adamant about having no interest in pursuing rental players at the deadline. However, he did not rule out trading for a player with term.

Fowler, who is in the first year of an eight-year contract with a $6.5 million cap hit, could be a welcome addition to bolster the Habs' back end. He  has tallied three goals and 11 points in 31 games this season with a minus-11 rating.

One thing in the way for Bergevin and the Canadiens: Fowler can submit a four-team approved trade list as part of his contract.

And that might not be the only issue here... According to Darren Dreger of TSN, there is no way the Ducks are parting with Fowler, despite their disastrous season. While he did comment on Thursday morning that all things should still be considered, he believes the Ducks are "highly, highly unlikely" to trade Fowler.

There is no doubt that the Ducks will be sellers ahead of the deadline, seeing that they have just two wins since Dec. 18 and have dropped to three points out of the playoff picture in the Western Conference. However, fans and insiders cannot imagine them parting with one thing that still gives Anaheim hope: Cam Fowler.

The Canadiens have battled hard to find themselves in a good playoff spot and are expected to make move to improve the roster ahead of the trade deadline, however, it might take an unbeatable offer to pry Fowler out of Anaheim...
