Saturday, the Detroit Red Wings made a couple of trade deals in order to deal with the ramifications of signing Andreas Athanasiou - whose contract put the team over the salary cap.

The first deal was the bigger of the two - sending Riley Sheahan and a pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Scott Wilson and a pick.

Wilson put up 8 goals and 18 assists to Sheahan's 2 goals and 11 assists. Sheahan is still the bigger piece here, literally and figuratively. The center famously struggled to score, but his defensive acumen makes him the kind of asset the Penguins needed in the third center position. He put up 13 and 14 goals in the two previous seasons, so there is offense there.

The second deal was minor - both players involved in the deal are currently in the AHL.

Hopefully this opens up the trade market a bit, and we see some bigger names on the move in the coming days and weeks.
