Trademark dispute: Golden Knights to become the Sand Knights?!
KEYStone Press

It took a while to find out what the name of the 31st franchise in the NHL was going to be, and now, it seems that this story is not over yet. Back in December, an official trademark dispute was initiated by the United States Patent and Trademark Office on behalf of the Army and the College of Sainte Rose.

Most fans forgot about it with the start of the season but the plaintiffs have filed separate requests to extend the deadline of their opposition to the "Vegas Golden Knights" and "Las Vegas Golden Knights". According to Chris Creamer of Sports Logos, both parties have been granted an extension and have until January 2018 to do something about the team's name. Though they could do nothing at all, find an agreement or demand a name change, no one knows what will happen.

What is a fact now revealed is that although the Golden Knights' other registered trademarks of "Silver Knights" and "Desert Knights" have expired, they still have the Domain name for Sand Knights, who was renewed back in August.

We will need to give tabs on this new chapter to the saga.
