Transaction Alert: NHL team signs WHL scoring leader
Keystone Press

The Calgary Flames announced that they’ve signed 2016 6th round selection Matthew Phillips to a three-year, entry-level contract.

The Calgary native has 28 goals and 59 points in 39 games with the WHL’s Victoria Royals this season. His point total makes him Victoria’s leading scorer and seventh in the entire league.

It’s unlikely that Phillips will join the Flames roster this season, even next season he’ll be considered a long shot. The 19-year-old is just 5’7” and 150 lbs, so look for him to bulk up and get some time in the AHL before he makes his NHL debut with the Flames in the future.
