Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins

Prior to last night’s game against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins signed veteran goaltender Sebastien Caron to an emergency tryout contract to backup goaltender Anthony Peters.

No doubt this is an odd move… but does it point to a possible recall of Casey DeSmith? Pittsburgh Penguins backup bappeared to suffer a wrist injury in the team’s last 5-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers and was spelled by starter Matt Murray for the game’s third period. If he’s deemed ineligible for tonight’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes, expect the Penguins to make a gameday call up for DeSmith.

In the meantime, Caron played 0 minutes in last night’s 3-2 overtime win for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Penguins fans may remember the veteran from his stint with the team in the early 2000s, however. Caron was selected in the 3rd round (86th overall) of the 1999 NHl Entry Draft by the Penguins and would go on to play parts of five seasons split between Pittsburgh and Wilkes-Barre. He played a career high 40 games for Pittsburgh in 2003-04, putting up a miserable 9-24-5 record.
