Today officially marks the end of a pretty amazing career for one Trevor Daley.

According to a report from the Penguins official website, veteran defenseman Trevor Daley has made the decision to call it a career and retirement as a player in the National Hockey League. Daley, a former 2nd round pick (43rd overall) of the Dallas Stars in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft has had an extensive career in the NHL with a whopping 1058 games under his belt, at the time of his retirement only 13 active players have played in more games, and will now be moving to the next phase of his career as per the Penguins.

The Penguins have also announced that Daley will now be joining their front office staff and will take on the role of hockey operations advisor moving forward. Daley only spent about a season and a half within the Penguins organization as a player but it seems clear given his hiring in the midst of a pandemic that he made a good impression on the Penguins management team. Of course that has no doubt been helped by the fact that the two crowning achievements in Daley's hockey career came as a member of the Penguins, back to back Stanley Cup Championships in both 2016 and 2017.

Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford has released the following statement:

"First, I would like to congratulate Trevor on an incredibly successful 16-year career," said Rutherford. "In addition to being a Stanley Cup Champion with us, he left us with a great impression due to his professional demeanor and quiet leadership qualities. Those traits, along with his desire to want to learn about the business side of the NHL, made him a great candidate to join our staff."

The 37 year old blue liner will officially see his career come to a close with 89 goals and 220 assists for a total of 309 points to his name. Over his career he also accrued 648 penalty minutes. By anyone's metrics 1000+ games and a pair of Stanley Cup rings is one hell of a career, one that Daley can be proud of, and we wish him nothing but the best in the next chapter of his life.
