Twice Cup winning defenseman done for in Chicago?

He's made a huge contribution in the past.

It's no secret, getting old in the NHL is a pretty bad thing. Sure, phenoms such as Jaromir Jagr and Chris Chelios will play forever, but the vast majority of players will hit their peak around 28 years old and slowly decline afterward. As the song goes, it's sad but true!

Anyhow, one guy who's not getting older is Johnny Oduya. He's been in the league since 1999 and won two Stanley Cups with the Blackhawks before being briefly moved to Dallas. He was reacquired at the end of the last season for a Playoff push that fell pretty flat in the end. It was the end of his 2 years, 7,5M$ contract and he's now UFA. Mark Lazerus, NHL insider for the Blackhawks, was asked if there was a remote chance to see Oduya back in Chicago next season. His answer is pretty clear.

This could be the last we see of Oduya in the league. At 35 years old and without a contract with a regressing performance, there's still a chance for him to land a new short term deal somewhere. With recent injuries, he might simply decide to hang the skates altogether.
