It appears that two Stanley Cup contenders are negotiating over the biggest prize on the trade market.

According to NHL Network analyst Brian Lawton, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals are locked in a fierce battle over St. Louis Blues defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk.

Shattenkirk is a pending unrestricted free agent, and it’s long been assumed the Blues can’t afford to give Shattenkirk a raise over his $4.25-million cap hit. Shattenkirk is just 27 and one of the game’s premier puck-moving defensemen. He’s the type of commodity who doesn’t hit the open market often.

The asking price for Shattenkirk is already sky-high, and is believed to be a prospect, a first-round draft pick and may include a third piece.

With both of these teams looking to make a run at the Cup, they may be willing to pay that high price for his services.
