Two sources link Steve Yzerman to the New York Rangers.

This would be devastating for fans in Detroit.

Well this is certainly turning into a very interesting development.

Former National Hockey League superstar turned National Hockey League executive Steve Yzerman shocked the world last summer when he announced that he would be stepping down as the general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning. The news came completely out of nowhere as not only did Yzerman achieve tremendous success as the general manager of that organization, but he had also built them into a perennial playoff contender and the favorites to win the Stanley Cup Championship in 2019.

The was of course wild speculation following the move with many believing that this was simply a precursor to his inevitable move to the Detroit Red Wings, the team with whom he achieved all of his success as a player in the NHL. Although that talk has died down at different times over the course of the 2018 - 2019 National Hockey League regular season, this in spite of the fact that Yzerman's contract runs out at the end of this current season, it has never truly gone away. In fact I believe the rumors will persist until Yzerman either takes the job in Detroit or finds another job somewhere else that is more suitable, what I did not believe however was that the latter might be more likely than the former.

No fewer than 2 National Hockey League insiders have now linked Yzerman to the New York Rangers in a very serious way, with the expectation being that Yzerman would take over at the very top of that organization. Yzerman would fill the void left by the departing Glen Sather, a legend in his own right, and considering Sather's history and the market that the New York Rangers franchise has at its fingertips, it's not hard to see why Yzerman might be interested.

From Rangers insider Larry Brooks:

Steve Yzerman, likely the hottest pending free agent in hockey, is amenable to being wooed by the Rangers to succeed Glen Sather as team president, multiple sources with knowledge of his thinking have told The Post.

Well on Saturday night during Hockey Night in Canada, Sportsnet's National Hockey League insider Nick Kypreos echoed those comments.

"It really is coming down to two names.... and the surprising one might be Steve Yzerman. "

Before fans in Detroit hit the panic button though, Kypreos did add a very big caveat to his comments.

"There's a lot of people in our industry that believe that if there's an opportunity for him to go back to Detroit then there's no chance that the Rangers would have of locking in Steve Yzerman."

Nonetheless, given how much I know Red Wings fans want Yzerman back in the fold, him joining the Rangers would be devastating for fans of the Red Wings.
