Changes are almost being made behind the bench this offseason with the latest coming to the New York Islanders’ coaching staff.

Team insider Andrew Gross of Newsday has revealed that Scott Gomez’s two-season tenure as an Islanders’ assistant coach has ended.

It was confirmed on Tuesday by the club that Gomez will not return to the organization on head coach Barry Trotz’s staff in 2019-20, though the Islanders also emphasized Gomez was not fired.

While no official reason was given for Gomez walking out of the Islanders, Gross believes it could have to do with the addition of Jim Hiller to the coaching staff. Hiller was hired away from the Maple Leafs on June 19 as an assistant and ran the power-play in Toronto under coach Mike Babcock. Gomez was responsible for the power-play in Brooklyn, but struggled to get results with the team. The Islanders’ power play ranked 29th in the 31-team NHL last season.

We can only imagine that Hiller is coming in to take over Gomez’s responsibility for the upcoming season.

Gomez landed with the Islanders after an impressive career as a forward in the NHL. The 39-year-old played from 1999-2016. He won two Stanley Cups with the Devils —then run by Islanders president and general manager Lou Lamoriello

We might want to keep an eye on Gomez to see where he takes his coaching talents next…
