The Montreal Canadiens have added a new forward.

According to a breaking news report from the Habs themselves, the organization has come to terms on a 4 year contract with veteran forward Tyler Toffoli, one of the top free agent forwards still available on the market this offseason. The Habs are reporting that this deal will carry an average annual value of $4.25 million and we are busy digging for the remaining details of this deal.

On the surface this is looking like a solid deal for the Habs who will get Toffoli at a very reasonable number and a 4 year term for a guy that turned 28 this past April is darn near perfect. Toffoli will be 32 when this deal expires and that is usually right around the time NHL players start to show significant signs of a decline, and if that isn't the case the Habs will always have the option to extend him.

Update: This deal is looking even better for the Canadiens. According to a report from NHL insider Chris Johnston the Canadiens have structured this deal to be paid out all in salary, which means no real buyout protection for Toffoli, and there's also no trade protection attached to this deal. Of course this means that Toffoli can be traded on a whim, which is great flexibility to have for the Habs organization, but more importantly it also means that the Habs can expose him in the expansion draft if they wish to do so.

I know many fans in Vancouver were hoping the team would find a way to bring him back, but unfortunately that will obviously not be the case.

Stay tuned for more.
