Ulf Samuelsson gets a job as an NHL coach.

Boy oh boy this certainly is one hell of a way to draw attention to your team. 

On Monday the Florida Panthers officially announced that they will be bringing in one of hockey's most notorious figures of the past, former National Hockey League defenseman Ulf Samuelsson, onto their coaching staff. In a press release via the teams official website it was revealed that Samuelsson will join head coach Joel Quenneville behind the Panthers bench where he will take on the role of an assistant coach. 

Panthers general manager Bill Zito has released the following statement:

"Ulf is a knowledgeable and experienced coach who will be a great addition to the Panthers," said Zito as per NHL.com. "We are excited for him to join Joel's coaching staff and look forward to his competitive mentality and the impact that he can have on our team."

Samuelsson was an extremely controversial figure as a player, even going so far as to earn the moniker of "the most hated man in hockey." Samuelsson was known for his extremely physical style of play, one that many felt crossed the line into intentionally trying to hurt his opponents, but that was of course from a different and now bygone era of hockey. Perhaps the most infamous moment of Samuelsson's career came via a knee on knee hit he delivered to Boston Bruin Cam Neely, a hit that many including Neely believe ended his career.

His hiring here as a coach is however far less controversial with Samuelsson actually bringing a considerable amount of experience with him to the Panthers' bench. Samuelsson played in 1080 NHL games as a player, something that will no doubt prove to be beneficial in this role, but he now also has extensive coaching experience at the NHL level as well. Samuelsson worked behind the bench of the Phoenix Coyotes for 5 seasons as an assistant coach before spending 3 more season as an assistant with the New York Rangers. Most recently he spent two seasons as an assistant coach for the Chicago Blackhawks with his most recent season behind the bench comin during the 2018 - 2019 regular season.

Add to that the fact that Samuelsson was feared during his career on the ice and I think he should have no problem earning the respect of his players.
