Vancouver loses top pairing defenseman for over a month.
Keystone Press

The Vancouver Canucks could ill afford this news in their current situation.

The Canucks have announced that Alex Edler, their top pairing defenseman alongside rookie defenseman Troy Stecher, will undergo surgery today to repair his fractured index finger and as a result will miss the next four to six weeks due to the recovery process. Edler suffered the injury to his left hand in the first period of Vancouver's Saturday night contest against the Colorado Avalanche.

The Canucks have also been without Chris Tanev for a large part of the season leaving the team very thin on the blue line and now the loss of Edler will only compound that issue. The 30-year-old veteran was also likely playing a key role in the development of his rookie defensive partner so his absence will have an impact on multiple levels for the Canucks, all of them negative.

There's no word yet on how the Canucks will fill in that gap, but you can expect a call up of some sort in the near future for Vancouver.
