Veteran defenseman could be free agent after buyout this summer.

It sounds like a very well respected defenseman could be a free agent three years ahead of schedule.

In a recent report for The Athletic, insider James Mirtle commented on the current status of the Washington Capitals, and one of the most notable comments in his report was his belief that Brooks Orpik could be looking at a buyout of his contract this summer.

From Mirtle:

All of the new contracts they’ll need to give to Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov, Andre Burakovsky and others are going to mean they’re close to the cap, even if they don’t re-sign Justin Williams and T.J. Oshie. (Which they should try to do.)

They’ll likely have to buy out Brooks Orpik’s ill-advised deal.

The buyout of Orpik would provide the Capitals which some much needed cap space, cap space that can be used to sign some of the big name free agents they have this summer.

Here's a break down of what a buyout of Orpik's buyout would look like.
