The Winnipeg Jets are brining in a tad of controversy to the 2019-20 season on Wednesday, claiming veteran defenseman Luca Sbisa off waivers.

Sbisa was set to sign a one-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks after he was placed on waivers on Tuesday due to the NHL’s rules about signing a free agent during the season.

However, the Jets, who are in dire need of help on the back end, went ahead with the move and claimed him off waivers before the Ducks were able to sign him as one of their own.

The 29 year old attended the New York Islanders’ training camp on a professional tryout (PTO) contract this preseason after playing just 9 games for the team in all of 2018-19.

In 504 career NHL games split between the Isles, Golden Knights, Vancouver Canucks, Anaheim Ducks and Philadelphia Flyers, Sbisa has 18 goals and 103 points.

We wonder if the Ducks will make the Jets pay…

The other player who was placed on the waiver wire yesterday was Jonathan Ericsson of the Detroit Red Wings. He cleared waivers on Wednesday.
