Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson came under fire at the end of last season and over the course of the preseason schedule that began last month.

Recently, the 32-year-old Swede has received high praises from the coaching staff and fans alike, for his willingness to drop the gloves and pay the price for his team, as well as his surprisingly strong defensive play through the first three games of the young regular season schedule.

On Monday, Ercisson was struck in the face by a puck and required 20 stitches to fix the gash on his forehead. His teammates have teased him about it, and most notably Steve Ott.

Ott has taken it upon himself to give Ericsson a new nickname.

The name?

“Angel Face,” which Helene St. James reports she heard Ott call his teammate during practice.

“That’s what I call him now,” he told the reporter.
