Sometimes it pays off to gamble on yourself but sometimes it can backfire in the worst way!

In 2015-16, Montreal Canadiens' veteran forward Tomas Plekanec was coming off a 54 points season and his contract was up. Before becoming unrestricted free agent and test the water, he agreed to a 2-year / $12 million contract with the Habs, betting that he could maintain his production and cash out afterwards.

Big mistake.

Now aged 35, he had his worst season in career last year with a lousy 28 points and is ont the same pace this season. According to insider Nick Kypreos from Sportsnet, had he test the market when he had the chance two years ago, Plekanec would have easily gotten a 5-year / $25 million contract at the minimum.

Still according to Kypreos, this is money lost that he'll never see again now that his production and effectiveness dropped dramatically. While he could have secured a minimum of 3 extra years at a minimum $5 million salary, he now will most likely be let go by the Habs this summer and will have to take a major paycut wherever he lands next.
