Veteran with over 1000 NHL points wants a new deal, but does his team want him?

Could one of the most consistent players in the National Hockey League be headed to a new team?

On Monday San Jose Sharks insider Kevin Kurnz reported that veteran Patrick Marleau was hopeful to come back to the San Jose Sharks next season, Marleau is set to be a free agent this summer.

“Yeah, it would be nice. We’ll see if that’s an option,” Marleau said. “A lot of time here before this decision needs to be made.”

However Marleu says he wants to keep playing for several more seasons, and at 36 years of age the Sharks may not have the same level of interest when it comes to bringing him back on a new deal.

“at least five good years in me, or maybe more.”

“I still think I can contribute and play,” he said. “Until I think I can’t do that anymore, I’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”

When he was asked if he had any talks with the Sharks about a potential new deal, Marleau admitted that he had not.

"Not really, no.”

Marleau likely still has more to give at the NHL level, but with a number of young players needing new deals in the next dew seasons, a long-term deal from the Sharks may not be in the cards for Mearleau. With that in mind it could be extremely interesting to see him play for just the second NHL team of his professional career next season.
