What is in store for the Oilers after the All Star break?

Of all the teams who aren't where they wanted to be in the standings, the Oilers are probably the team who is the most disappointed.

The offseason additions on top of adding their 1st overall pick Connor McDavid to the roster was suppose to help them climb up the standings. Unfortunately McDavid went down with a serious injury after only 13 games where had had picked up 12 points. After that, the downward spiral began. More injuries hurt the Oilers and once again they found themselves at the bottom of the standings.

They currently sit tied for last place in the league with Toronto and Columbus. The most disappointing fact is that the additions of Cam Talbot and Andrej Sekera were suppose to help make the Oilers a better defensive team. However that is not really the case. Talbot's .914 save percentage and 2,60 GAA puts him 30th and 33rd in the league for those stats. You need your goaltender to be better. We can't just put all the blame on the goalie, but for what was expected for the Oilers, being -27 in goals for and goals against, is not what the Oilers brass had in mind.

Injuries will always hurt your team, especially long term injuries to key players. McDavid should return after the All Star break. So this season might not have been what everyone hoped for, but if it helps the Oilers grab another high draft pick and potentially a player like Austin Matthews, things should definitely turn around for the Oilers real soon.
