What Kopitar's new contract means for the Kings

First and foremost, the Kings can be pleased that they have locked up one of the best two way players in the game. He always seems to be in the right place defensively and we know how good he is offensively consider he leads the Kings in points almost every season.

Now for what this means for the Kings in the future. The Kings have always been a solid team with good depth. The cap hit of 10 Million a season will most likely put a little hurt on this fact since the Kings are always right up against the cap. The Kings have 48.423M dollars invested in 9 players through the 2019-20 season, only Drew Doughty's contract expires the year before.

That is a lot of money for only 9 players. The positive part is those players include Kopitar, Dustin Brown, Jeff Carter, Marian Gaborik, Kyle Clifford, Doughty, Alec Martinez, Jake Muzzin and Jonathan Quick. So the Kings core is mostly intact going forward. However, that doesn't overly leave tons of money for other players. The Kings will have to continue getting some young players into the lineup.

Now the question remains if there will be any money left to re sign Milan Lucic who is a free agent this coming off season. Also, Tyler Toffoli's current deal ends after next season and he will definitely be looking for a big increase.

So the Kings have a solid core going forward but they will have their work cut out while trying to fill the rest of their roster and keep some of their good young talents.
