The Minnesota Wild often comes up short in the playoff race, but general manager Paul Fenton is hoping to turn things around this summer after selling a lot of assets at the trade deadline.

Now, less than a week away from the start of free-agency season, the Wild is said to be ready to make a huge gamble after July 1st.

Team insider Michael Russo of The Athletic has reported that Fenton has been in contact with Joe Pavelski's agent, Dan Plante

Plante has talked to the San Jose Sharks captain about the Wild "a lot," adds Russo, and the team recently re-signed another Plante client, Brad Hunt.

While the Sharks are still hoping to re-sign their captain, Pavelski is a pending unrestricted free agent coming off the final season of the five-year, $30-million deal he signed with San Jose in the summer of 2013.

The Wild is also said to be interested in making an offer to another captain, New York Islanders’ Anders Lee.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman is convinced the Wild will battle for both players, which means the summer could be quite exciting in Minnesota.
