The bane of so many teams, the one word that can sweep contender status out from under suddenly and violently: injuries. That’s a word becoming all too familiar in Pittsburgh, and today is unfortunately no exception.

Reportedly, defenceman Kris Letang’s rehab process has been stalled. The 29-year-old veteran blueliner was put on the shelf late in February due to an upper-body injury, possibly a back ailment. He had 5 goals and 29 assists for 34 points in 41 games this season.

The Penguins currently have seven players on the injured list, three of which are defenceman. The depth chart is being tested at the end of the season in Pittsburgh.

Head coach Mike Sullivan has had to be creative with his lines lately, but insists that most of the holes will be filled by healthy players returning before the post season.

Apparently, Legtang is still one of those players expected back Sullivan confirmed saying, “He’s obviously been going through a rehab process…The nature of his injury is that it’s been a week-to-week thing that they’re trying to manage.”

Sullivan was keen to make the point that until he says otherwise, he’s expecting Letang to return for a run at a second consecutive Stanley Cup for the Penguins. Let’s hope those expectations are met, because Letang will be sorely missed if his rehab process doesn’t mesh with the NHL’s post-season schedule.

The Penguins will suit up against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday, April 2nd. Currently they are without Matt Cullen, Tom Sestito, Evgeni Malkin, Carl Hagelin, Trevor Daley, Olli Maatta and Kris Legtang due to injury.
