This just in, according to a report from NHL insider Darren Dreger of Sportsnet the Winnipeg Jets have inked restricted free agent defenseman Josh Morrissey to a eight year contract extension worth just over $6 million per season.

Check it out:

The 24 year old Morrissey put up a career high 31 points in just 59 games with the Jets last season and helped stabilize the Jets’ blue line with partner Jacob Trouba. With Trouba now departed due to an offseason trade with the New York Rangers though, it’ll be interesting to see how Morrissey adapts.

With or without Trouba though, Morrissey has established himself as a capable blue liner over the past three seasons and looks primed to break out offensively in 2019-20. Technically Morrissey wasn’t slated to become an RFA until next offseason but given GM Kevin Cheveldayoff’s difficulty in negotiations with unsigned RFAs Patrik Laine and Kyle Connor, he was wise to get Morrissey’s deal done and dusted early on.
