Yet another Penguins player injured!

The sick bay is full, stop it already.

These things are becoming an unfortunate routine for fans and players in Pittsburgh alike. The closer the NHL post-season gets, the more players the Penguins add to their injured list.

With names like Matt Cullen, Kris Letang, Tom Sestito, Evgeni Malkin, Carl Hagelin, Trevor Daley, and Olli Maatta all out of the lineup, the Penguins are due for a bit of good luck, right?

Perhaps, but their luck hasn’t changed yet, as top forward Kris Kunitz has been sidelined with a lower-body injury. Kunitz was conspicuously absent from Friday’s overtime period against the New York Rangers.

There is a slight silver lining to all this injury-related doom and gloom out of Pittsburgh: most of these players are listed as day-to-day. This means most of them could be back before the post-season, or rejoining the lineup early in the first round.

The Penguins are a great team with a lot of depth, but that depth is being stretched awfully thin right now. Forward Josh Archibald has been recalled from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the AHL. The 24-year-old Regina, Saskatchewan native has 2 goals in five games with the big club this season, and 16 goals and 13 assists in 61 games in the AHL.

The Penguins are a Stanley Cup calibre team, and could very well repeat as Champions this season. But that isn’t going to happen unless they can get their championship players back on the ice.

The Penguins next game is against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday, April 2nd, hopefully they’ll be able to take some names off the injured list once the weekend is over.
