A young Canadian defenseman has lost his life in what is now being called a murder suicide.

NCAA player Matt Hutchison, a young man who spent his free time as a volunteer firefighter, has been killed according to a report from the Canadian Press.

They say 24-year-old Matthew Hutchinson and 21-year-old Kelsey Annese were stabbed to death at a home near the campus of the State University of New York at Geneseo, about 55 kilometres south of Rochester.

The body of 24-year-old former student Colin Kingston was also found at the home on Sunday and police say they are confident he was the killer and he acted alone.

It appears this was a crime of passion, and the alleged murderer reportedly turned the knife on himself after dispatching his victims, and is believed to have called his father before taking his own life.

There were reportedly no signs of struggle, and there is a belief that the the victims were killed in their sleep, and one can only hope that they did not suffer. Several teams will be honoring Hutchison with moments of silence in the coming days.
