Young prospect puts on 40 pounds!

One young player is standing out from the pack at the Montreal Canadiens development camp and team insider Stu Cowen of the Montreal Gazette had one thing to say when he saw the 20-year-old prospect walking around:

Man, he’s friggin’ huge!”

Habs management is getting quite excited about prospect Ryan Poehling and it makes sense.

But one stunning thing about the forward is that he managed to put on 40 pounds in the past two years. As Cowen points out, when the Canadiens selected Poehling in the first round, 25th overall at the 2017 NHL Draft, he was 6-foot-2 and around 170 pounds. He is now almost 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds.

“Putting on 40 pounds is a big difference,” said Poehling to the Gazette. “There’s always a bunch of fitness testing that you can compare with everyone else, but I like comparing it with myself. I think my fitness testing in general for myself has just kind of kept going up and up.”

The kid quickly became a hero this past April when he recorded a hat trick in the Habs’ last game of the season against the Toronto Maple Leafs and scored the shootout winner to end the contest.

The Montreal crowd will be hoping to see him crack the roster at camp and won’t forget him. But we all know with him bulking up like this, Poehling will be hard to miss!
