Despite missing the first two months of 2016-17 with a sprained left ankle, Jack Eichel led the Sabres with 57 points last season and finished second with 24 goals. The 20-year-old became a force on the power play and appears to be on the verge of turning into an NHL superstar.

Eichel currently has one season remaining on the entry-level contract he signed after being selected with the second overall pick in the 2015 draft — one spot behind Connor McDavid. Reports surfaced this summer that the Sabres and Eichel are discussing a contract extension that could run the NHL maximum eight years.

It’s likely a new contract will spark Eichel and motivate him even more than he already is. The Sabres fired head coach Dan Bylsma and general manager Tim Murray this offseason — a day after the young superstar denied reports he had an issue with the two. Buffalo has been struggling over the past three seasons, but with the change of staff, the rise of Rasmus Ristolainen and the return of Jason Pominville, the Sabres will be a whole different team in 2017-18.

Eichel has scored over 20 goals in each of his two NHL seasons thus far and appears ready to take that next step.
