Your Call: If Doughty leaves LA, where does he go?

Norris Trophy winning defenseman and two-time Stanley Cup champion Drew Doughty made waves earlier this week as a result of his comments during an interview with The Hockey News’ Matt Larkin. When asked if a contract extension with the Los Angeles Kings was in the works, Doughty replied “I’d love to re-sign in LA. But if our team isn’t going in the right direction…,” he said cryptically. “I want to win Cups. I don’t give a **** where I play. I just want to win Cups and that’s the bottom line.”

Wow. That’s a bold statement from the blue liner. So, let’s look into our crystal balls and attempt to predict which teams will be Stanley Cup contenders when Doughty hits the market as a free-agent in two years. Where would be a good landing spot for the 27-year-old? He’ll still be only 29 when he inks his next deal and could put a good team over the top.

Speculation is bound to be hot with the Toronto Maple Leafs. But what about Canada’s other hot, young team the Edmonton Oilers? Or how about the Ottawa Senators? Could you imagine Doughty anchoring a defensive corps with Erik Karlsson? What about other up and coming teams like the Tampa Bay Lightning or Dallas Stars? The Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks are perennial Stanley Cup threats. What do you think?
