This one seems like it’s been a long time coming. The Dallas Stars have announced that Sergei Zubov’s number 56 will be raised to the rafters at American Airlines Arena, never to be worn by another Stars’ player again. The ceremony will be held sometime during the 2020-21 season.

12 of the 16 seasons Zubov spent in the NHL were with Dallas after being drafted in the fifth round (wow!) by the New York Rangers in 1990. After helping the Rangers win the Stanley Cup in 1994, he was traded to Pittsburgh in 1995. He spent just one season there with rumours swirling that he and team captain Mario Lemieux didn't get along, especially on the powerplay where both men wanted to be in control. In June of 1996, he was traded to Dallas for Kevin Hatcher, and the rest is history.

In 1999, Zubov helped Dallas win its first and only Stanley Cup. He would retire in 2011 leading the Dallas Stars in every major category for defensemen. He’s also a three time All-Star and is being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame later this month. He’s widely considered to be one of the best offensive defensemen to ever play the game.

"I’m touched and it’s been an honour to play for this franchise for such a long time,” Zubov said in a video posted on the Stars’ Twitter account after being told his number was being retired.

Zubov’s sweater will join Neal Broten (No. 7), Bill Goldsworthy (No. 8), Mike Modano (No. 9), Bill Masterton (No. 19) and Jere Lehtinen’s (No. 26) in the rafters in Dallas.
