A look at the NHL's dirtiest suspensions.

Some of these were awful.

The National Hockey League has seen some pretty egregious cheap shots during its long and storied history with some of the behavior on the ice frankly bordering on the criminal. In the more modern day of the NHL players who have gone way over the line have been punished with hefty fines and lengthy suspensions, but although it certainly has curbed some of that behavior it has not completely eliminated it from the came.

In the video below you will see some of the worst of the worst as far as the modern era of the NHL is concerned with some of the cheapest hits in the league's history. We cover a lot of bases here starting with a brutal hit from long time NHL veteran Steve Downie on Dean McAmmond. This one checks every box as the hit is late, high, Downie leaves his feet, and it is delivered to an unsuspecting opponent. It would earn Downie a whopping 20 games.

Up next is arguably the most infamous punch in NHL history. It is of course the infamous punch delivered by then Vancouver Canucks forward Todd Bertuzzi to an unsuspecting Steve Moore of the Colorado Avalanche. That one would also earn him 20 games although it carried even more serious implications for Bertuzzi off the ice as Moore sought damages in a civil suit.

We up the anti to a 21 games suspension for this next one, a rather blatant cheap shot on the part of Dale Hunter. A frustrated Hunter delivered an extremely late hit to Pierre Turgeon who didn't have the puck as he had just scored and the play was blown dead. Hunter was awarded a long vacation for this one and there was no question he deserved it.

Jesse Boulerice of the Philadelphia Flyers earned himself a whipping 25 games for a blatant cheap shot of his own, this time a crosscheck. The crosscheck was delivered to notorious agitator Ryan Kesler who at the timer was a member of the Vancouver Canucks organization. Kesler never saw it coming, it was a blatant shot to the head and face of Kesler, and it saw Boulerice earn one of the longest suspensions in NHL history.

There's one more on this list, and I have no doubt many of you will know it already, but for those of you who don't you'll have to watch to find out.
