Breaking: Jimmy Howard mouths of to Blashill after getting pulled tonight.

There was some serious drama between a National Hockey League head coach and his number one goaltender on Wednesday night.

Despite having a very strong season so far for the Detroit Red Wings, goaltender Jimmy Howard was pulled on Wednesday night when he allowed four goals against one of the NHL's worst teams in the Edmonton Oilers.

There's certainly some debate to be had as to whether or not Howard deserved to be pulled in this particular case, but head coach Jeff Blashill wasted little time to send in backup Peter Mrazek after the fourth goal went in. The general consensus from fans in Detroit, at least so far, appears to be that Howard has played well enough all season to warrant some leeway from his coach.

Nonetheless the decision was made, and while the cameras only briefly showed Howard leaving the ice, it was very clear that he gave Blashill a piece of his mind when he was forced to return to the bench.

Obviously the Red Wings are hoping this won't create a rift between their number one goaltender and their coach. Making matters worse for Blashill is that he has been on the hot seat all season, and perhaps even since late last season, and his starting goalie showing insubordination like this won't help his image.
