Breaking: NHL veteran leaves the game after sickening, head-first, crash into boards.

A National Hockey League veteran has left the game and not returned after an awful looking accident on Wednesday night.

27-year-old New Jersey Devils forward Marcus Johansson was taken out of the game after he appeared to badly injure himself in the opening moments of the Devils' match up against the Vancouver Canucks.

Johansson was in a race for the puck when he appeared to lose his balance causing him to crash head first into the boards at a high rate of speed. The impact appeared to snap his head and neck backwards and he lay on the ice in pain for several moments before eventually leaving the playing surface.

Hopefully he's going to be alright, but this looked like a particularly nasty impact.
