It was turning into a pretty terrific afternoon to be a Canadian hockey fan but now things have suddenly taken a very dark turn.

Canada faced off against Finland on Saturday in the semi-final of the World Junior Championship tournament and to suggest that this was a one sided game would be a massive understatement. The Canadians dominated from the opening minute of the game and took an early 3 - 0 lead just minutes into the contest, eventually cruising to a dominant 5 - 0 win over Finland. It was a much needed win for a Canadian squad that was thoroughly embarrassed by the Russian team that they will now face in the final earlier in the tournament, but it was a win that cost them.

During the game controversial Canadian captain Barrett Hayton was injured when an awkward collision with Finland's Lassi Thomson resulted in what looked like a pretty bad injury. Hayton and Thomson were engaged in a fierce battle for the puck as they chased it down the ice, and the end result of their battle had both men going hard into the boards one on top of the other. Unfortunately for Hayton he found himself under the weight of Thompson and as a result his body appeared to absorb the brunt of the impact. As the two men went crashing into the boards Hayton got his arm up in time to protect himself from the impact, but unfortunately that arm appears to be the part of his body that is now injured.

In the video replay you can see Hayton's arm buckle under the pressure exerted by the weight of both men and immediately after that you can see that Hayton is heavily favoring his arm. The Canadian captain rolled on the ice for a few seconds while clutching at that arm, and when he eventually came to his feet he headed to the Canadian bench while hunched over, holding that arm tightly against his body in the process. There has been no update on his condition at this time so were going to have to wait and see if he can come back for the Finals of this tournament.
