An ugly hit from the young Golden Knight.

Carrier delivers a dangerous hit to Nurse from behind.

I have to admit I was pretty impressed by how little commotion this rather ugly hit generated from the Edmonton Oilers.

On Sunday night the Oilers were facing off against the Las Vegas Golden Knights and things turned pretty ugly during the opening minutes of the game's second period. The Oilers had a slight lead over the Golden Knights and what initially looked like a relatively throw away play quickly turned ugly when Las Vegas Golden Knights forward William Carrier took some liberties with Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse.

After less than a minute had expired in the period Carrier lined up Nurse for a hit along the boards but instead of delivering a clean body check he hammered Nurse right between the numbers with a dangerous hit. Now I will give Carrier, a 23 year old who is not known as being a particularly dirty player, some leeway here as it did appear that this may not have been entirely intentional. It looked a lot like a combination of reading the play wrong as well as perhaps a little clumsiness on the part of Carrier resulted in him riding Nurse into the boards from behind, but that likely was not any consolation to Nurse at the time.

There was seemingly no reaction from Nurse's teammates on the play in spite of the fact that he was in control of the puck at the time of the hit, and you have to question the response from the Oilers considering how many times Nurse himself has rushed to the aid of his teammates. Perhaps it's due to the fact that Nurse would typically respond to that kind of play on the Oilers side of the ice, alongside veterans like Milan Lucic and Zack Kassian, but no doubt Nurse would have appreciated a little back up as well.

Nurse appeared to be shaken up on the play and was grimacing as he got back to his feet but the good news for the Oilers here appears to be that Nurse was not seriously hurt on the play. Additionally Carrier was awarded a penalty, and rightfully so, but he did not protest too much seemingly feeling pretty remorseful about the hit.
