Is it a dive?

Controversy after “dive” from Kadri draws a penalty for the Leafs.

Thank the hockey gods for the power of instant replay.

Social media exploded on Friday night with outrage directed at Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nazem Kadri after it appeared that he had taken a blatant dive to draw a penalty in Game 5.

Kadri took a light slash/crosscheck from Washington Capitals Alexander Ovechkin to the upper-body and immediately appeared to launch himself into the air while clutching his leg in pain. Obviously the action and the result didn't match up.

However thanks to the benefit of instant replay it became clear that there was actually a second slash on the play from Washington Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen. While Kadri could very well be criticized for embellishing on the play, it would not be fair to call this a dive.
